LISD Board approves plans for ML Cisneros Building

The Lockhart ISD Board of Trustees approved a guaranteed maximum price of $4.3 million for the M.L. Cisneros Administration Building and PRIDE High School renovation project.

Additionally, the Board approved funding for resurfacing the building’s north parking lot, replacing all exterior windows for energy efficiency, replacing the entire roof, and refurbishing the instructional wing for PRIDE High School.

The historic Adams Gym will continue to stand on the property.

The total approved project cost is $5.7 million, including necessary permits, inspections, fees, furniture, and equipment.

M.L. Cisneros is the original Lockhart High School, and was constructed in 1923. The facility most recently served ninth grade students until the grade level transferred to the newly renovated and expanded Lockhart High School in August 2017.

The Board-approved plans, consistent with the recommendations from the original community-based facilities task force, will consolidate district administrative functions in one location for the purposes of increased collaboration and operational efficiency. Most administrative staff are currently located at 105 S. Colorado, formerly a local feed store.  Other support services, including special education, food and nutrition services, and community education, are housed in other separate facilities.

Additionally, PRIDE High School will relocate to M.L. Cisneros, expanding possibilities for program growth.

Four major sources, including the remaining 2014 bond funds, general fund appropriations, general fund balance, and a maintenance tax note, will fund the project.  The proceeds from the sales of four LISD properties, including 201 S. Colorado St. 105 S. Colorado St., and residential lots at 605 Sabine St. and 1100 N. Wichita St., will also support project costs.

“The district is grateful for the Board’s support of this move to repurpose the M.L. Cisneros Building, as the facilities task force recommended, and the opportunity to restore this historic building for our Lockhart community,” said Superintendent Susan Bohn. “As the district grows, it is important for our administrative leadership to work even more closely and efficiently to best support the needs of our students and staff.”

The building will continue to honor its namesake, community pillar Monico Luis Cisneros, a former Lockhart ISD Trustee, Caldwell County Justice of the Peace, and Lockhart’s first Hispanic Mayor.

The project is expected to be completed October 2018.
